What Makes Dawn of War the Best RTS?

The best RTS release for 2004, Dawn of War was released by THQ Inc (Toy Head-Quarters), a worldwide international American developer and publisher of video games and is based on the popular tabletop wargame Warhammer 40,000. The original release came in September 2004 and quickly grew in popularity gaining "Game of the Year" status with a Game of the Year Edition release in 2005 containing 4 exclusive maps. March 2006 saw the best RTS release of the Gold Edition which contains the Game of the Year edition plus the first expansion "Winter Assault". The Platinum Collection was then released later that year containing the Gold Edition plus the first two expansions "Winter Assault" & "Dark Crusade". Finally the Complete Collection containing the original game plus all three expansions were released in early 2008 and involves 5 playable races taken from the extremely popular Warhammer 40,000 setting.

2009 brought the release of Dawn of War II with a free downloadable content pack following shortly after that allows players to take control of either a Space Marine Captain, an Ork Mekboy or an Eldar Farseer, and co-operate with other players in order to take on waves of AI controlled units.

The Dawn of War gameplay focuses on the taking and holding of strategic positions on the battlefield where resources are provided to construct additional forces to complete the desired mission tasks. Unlike other types of the best RTS games, Dawn of War units are commanded as squads rather than individuals which are made up of 10 individuals that move and attack in unison and can replace or produce their own units anywhere in the field. The best RTS squads can also be equipped with special weapons and commanding units that are produced separately to increase the squads tactical value in on the battlefield. Infantry units can engage their enemies with ranged attacks or in hand to hand combat and have weapons designed for both types of combat. Dawn of War II shows an advanced physics engine, more realistically sized vehicles and improved AI tech where squads automatically take cover during battle. Overall the highly emphasized graphical quality, realistically scaled environments and visceral frontline combat focus makes the Dawn of War series the best RTS currently available.
